Tips for games on the 21 January 2006

Birmingham   VS   Portsmouth
Steve Bruce will be praying that his beloved Birmingham can get their third home win of the season against fellow strugglers Portsmouth. Olisadebe will need to start in the midfield for Pompey because he was the most effective when he came on against Everton. Chris Sutton will be needing much better service if he is to assist in Birminghams survival. Hard working Birmingham midfielder Jarosik will have gotten used to Chris Suttons off the ball runs and the two will collaborate to get the points for the blues.

Tip: Birmingham

Bolton   VS   Manchester City
With a number of players out of action for Bolton due to the Africa Cup of Nations it was expected that Japanese playmaker Nakata step up and guide the team, but it was not to be and his two yellow cards inside the first half hour had Bolton scrambling. Their 0-0 draw against Blackburn may have been different had it not been for the send off. Manchester City accounted for cross town rivals United in what seemed to be a comfortable win. The first two goals were lucky not to be ajudged offside and it seemed that United let the decisions get to them. City face another derby of sorts but this time they are away at the Reebok and things will be different.

Tip: Bolton

Everton   VS   Arsenal
Everton have now had three successive victories but despite their good run they now must face up to a rampant Arsenal who put seven past Middlesbrough last time out. There is really not much to say about this one other than anything but a Gunners win will surprise many.

Tip: Arsenal

Middlesbrough   VS   Wigan
After the thrashing the Boro boys endured against Arsenal they must be glad to return to the Riverside this week even if that will count for little against the seasons surprise package Wigan who also lost last time out. M'Boro are edging closer and closer to the relegation zone and having won only three at home does not inspire me to back the home side.

Tip: Draw

Newcastle   VS   Blackburn
Newcastle return at home has been poor this season and clearly they are missing the services of Owen. Michael Chopra and Lee Bowyer are having to step up and not only be providers for Shearer but also chip in with some efforts on goal themselves. Blackburn were held to a 0-0 draw by ten men Bolton last week but Emerton and Dickov will not be kept quiet for much longer.

Tip: Blackburn

Tottenham   VS   Aston Villa
Villa lost despite going ahead on 27 minutes and dominating play in the first half against West Ham United. Milan Baros and James Milner were the stars for Villa and they will need to repeat their efforts if Villa are to get anything at White hart lane. Spurs loss at Anfield means that they can ill afford to drop points this week if they are to maintain their ambitions for that precious European place.

Tip: Tottenham

WBA   VS   Sunderland
WBA had a very important win against Wigan last week and Bryan Robsons men are gaining in confidence. The Black cats cannot win anything but gave a good account of themselves against Chelsea when they went ahead in the 12th minute. It took Chelsea 69 minutes to win the game and that was a credit to the Sunderland. This week they travel to the Hawthorns and if form is any judge they are not likely to get anything there either.

Tip: WBA

Chelsea   VS   Charlton
Can anybody beat Chelsea? the answer is an emphatic NO! Alan Curbishley has been known to devise match plans that upset much better teams and if he turns over Mourinho he will most certainly be the toast of London.

Tip: Chelsea

Manchester United   VS   Liverpool
On form Liverpool have been the team to beat in recent times, and Manager Benitez winning the Manager of the month twice in a row is proof of that. But.... This is no ordinary game. This is WAR! The scousers hate anything from up the road and United like nothing better than beating Liverpool. This is a game that could decide that all important second place and I am leaning to the home side in a close encounter provided that United players keep their temper and not lash out like Ronaldo did against Manchester City last week.

Tip: Manchester United

My five selections this week:
  • Birmingham
  • Bolton
  • Middlesbrough & Wigan Draw
  • Tottenham Hotspurs
  • WBA

Good Luck
